The class teachers at School of the Suncoast have received special training at Waldorf Institutes around the country and they continue their professional development each summer through focus classes and conferences. In 2004 the full time faculty traveled as a group to the World Teachers' Conference held every four years in Dornach, Switzerland, headquarters for Waldorf education. The specialty teachers, as well, have received training in how to bring their subjects as an art of education in the Waldorf way.
A very specific process is in place for hiring teachers that includes conversations with references, face to face interviews, demonstration of teaching abilities and background checks. New teachers are mentored and evaluated during the first year and all other teachers are observed every year and evaluated by outside evaluators every three years.
The Faculty is responsible for all matters pertaining to the children, to the curriculum and to the teachers. This is in keeping with Rudolf Steiner's statement that those persons who directly work with the children should have authority over all areas pertaining to them. The faculty meets weekly to study together, do artistic activities, do in-depth child studies and oversee curriculum matters, teacher development and festival preparations.
We see the education of the children as a true partnership between parent and teacher and encourage direct and frequent communication so that the needs of the children are met in the best way. Class meetings are held three or four times a year, or at the end of each block of study, in which parents are apprised of the class work and students' progress. Additionally, parent/teacher conferences are held twice a year and a detailed year-end report is written by each teacher for every child.
